Original '79 Vanagon concept

This is the actual, original 1979 VW concept / prototype of what the T25 / T3 / Vanagon almost ended up looking like. I really didn't like it at all, from its windows, to its shape, to its height. If you look closely and compare it to its previous generation in the background, you can see that this concept is actually smaller and not as tall- more like the mid-1980's Toyota mini-vans, mid to late 1980's Nissan and Mitsubish mini vans as well. I actually believe Toyota was highly influenced by this exact concept minivan, and used several of its design cues. Case in point, notice the location and lines where the door handles are: Notice the rear wheel well being the same shape and height as the front ones (the VW T1 & T2 buses and Vanagon all have lower rear wheel wells). Notice the side windows, in particular the wider space between the driver side versus the rear windows.. Also, just like Toyota, the same smaller size, and front end shape- this VW version just has more of a curve, but otherwise it is a dead ringer for the Toyota minivan.
